5 Must Watch Movies For English Literature Students

Literature and film stand not far away, they are quite connected. By reading a work of literature, the reader has to open his mind for imaginations. Books only show words, and the images of the story are imagined in the brain. On the other hand, films give a particular picture of the story to the audiences, and the audiences get details through visual and hearing.

Literature students benefit a lot from great movies. Here, I have hand-picked 5 movies which I think you must absolutely watch if you are a literature student. The list includes movies about authors, poets, writing and setting. These movies will surely develop your taste in English Literature. The selected movies are easy to find online. The students and young adults will definitely enjoy and benefit in the long run. From thousands of films, I have hand-picked only 5 movies, because I believe they are the best of all time.

1. Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Shakespeare in Love depicts an imaginary love affair involving Viola de Lesseps and playwright William Shakespeare while he was writing Romeo and Juliet. The film is directed by John Madden, written by Marc Norman and playwright Tom Stoppard. Joseph Fiennes played the role of William Shakespeare, and Gwyneth Paltrow beautifully played the role of Viola de Lesseps, which garnered her wider acclaim. You can also see in the film, how the Elizabethan theatres used to be, how Shakespeare wrote the great plays and the contemporary England. I personally think this is one of the best literary films of all time and it's a must watch for every literature student.

2. Dead Posts Society (1989)

Peter Weir's 1989 classic Dead Poets Society isn't just beloved because it stars Robin Williams (though that does help). This touching drama tells the story of an inspiring and iconoclastic English teacher who changes the lives of his teenage boarding school students. Williams' character instills a love of poetry in his students, prompting them to carpe diem (seize the day) with their newfound exuberant enjoyment of life and individualism.

3. Elizabeth (1998)

Elizabeth is directed by Shekhar Kapur, and starring Cate Blanchett in the title role of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The film is based on the early years of Elizabeth's reign, where she is elevated to the throne after the death of her half-sister Mary I, who had imprisoned her. This film will give a clear idea about the Elizabethan era.

4. Great Expectations (1998)

Great Expectations is a film adaptation of Charles Dickens's 1861 novel of the same name, co-written and directed by Alfonso CuarĂ³n and starring Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow. Finn runs into Estella, his teenage love interest, and hopes to win her over. She reciprocates his feelings but soon, Finn is left heartbroken when he realises that Estella is simply manipulating him.

5. Othello (1995)

Othello, a 1995 film based on William Shakespeare's great tragedy of the same name. It was directed by Oliver Parker and stars Laurence Fishburne as the title character Othello, Irene Jacob as Desdemona, and Kenneth Branagh as Iago.

The story is about the Moorish General Othello, who is manipulated into thinking that his new wife Desdemona has been carrying on an affair with his Lieutenant Michael Cassio, when in reality, it is all part of the scheme of a bitter Ensign named Iago.

You got some wonderful recommendations, right? So what are you waiting for? It's time to watch and take something in with you from these great movies. Enjoy!
